Curtain Wall Installation
A curtain wall is an outer wall of a building that are non-structural, but work the same way a typical wall does; keeping occupants in, and keeping the weather out. Since these walls are non-structural, they can be made of lightweight material. A proper curtain wall installation can last many years before wear and tear require a new wall installed.Curtain walls are typically designed with extruded aluminum frames, however, in the past curtain walls were made of steel. The new aluminium frame is infilled with glass, which provides beautiful building. Other benefits to this frame are that it encourages the use of natural light, cutting cost of electric bills for the building. Other common infills include: stone veneer, metal panels, and operable windows or vents. A curtain wall is designed to resist air and water infiltration, reduce force on the building against strong winds, and hold steady seismic forces acting on the building. The first step to installation is the design of the curtain wall; select a frame with the correct glazing and pockets so that there is a proper water collecting system, this way the water doesn't ruin your curtain wall. Key features for this include large weep holes, a slope in the surface, and proper drainage. The curtain wall has to be up to standard with the AAMA's Curtain Wall Design Guide, which layout an extended guideline about the ins and outs of requirements for curtain walls. The last bit of construction and installation relies on multiple mock-tests and precision in perfecting every wall built. There are a series of laboratory testing of a mock-up curtain wall prior to finalizing project shop drawings, which are tested in AAMA Accredited Laboratory facilities. Then, a field mock-up, which field tests are conducted by an independent third party agency accredited by AAMA. Finally, there's multiple field testing, which look at the quality of the curtain walls in both fabrication and durability.
