Glass partitioning is an architectural design element in which glass is used as a division to create separate spaces or enclosed rooms within a larger space. The use of glass partitions allow for maximum light and an open flow design. Within a space, the glass can serve as purely functional element, or as a decorative centerpiece. With several different framing and mounting options, glass partitions can be made to fit with a wide variety of styles. Glass partitions can be installed fixed or moveable and can be framed with aluminum or wood, or even frameless for a seamless look. For moveable partitions, glass can be mounted into a frame with a tensioning system, or onto sliding tracks. In fixed installations, the glass can be mounted floor-to-ceiling within frames, or suspended from the ceiling or fixed in the floor. Aluminum frames are often used in retail settings in storefronts or in modern industrial design. Wood framing will add more warmth to the presence of glass. Frameless installations can be achieved with ceiling suspension. Door options are also available with glass partitioning in swing, bifold, or on a sliding track. There are many different types of glass and style options that are used in glass partitions. Some common types of glass are clear, tinted or colored glass, frosted glass, glass with sandblasted patterns, laminated glass, smart switchable glass, and glass with soundproof qualities. Often clear glass, sometimes sandblasted with patterns, are used in commercial settings to create separate office spaces. When privacy options are needed, smart switchable glass has special properties that uses an electrical current to turn glass from completely transparent to opaque. Glass partitions can also be made soundproof by adding a plastic inner layer to absorb vibrations passing through the glass. Curved, decorative, or grooved glass can also be selected for more art centric designs. Glass can be made in limitless colors, shapes, and sizes as well as with custom-made designs and logos. There are also many safety features built into many different types of glass. When glazed or laminated, glass can be made heat-resistant or fireproof. When glass is fire rated, it is constructed in multiple layers to prevent the spread of heat and energy. This type of glass is frequently used when the glass is in an area that is susceptible to fire damage. Another safety feature is the infusion of a wire mesh or mixture of substances into the glass to make it resistant to impact, shatterproof, or even bulletproof. When combining all the variables of design, safety, and functionality, glass partitioning can be implemented in almost any setting from apartment homes to high rise corporate office towers. The use of glass partitions can transform any open space into areas of productivity, add a luxurious aesthetic combined with practicality and privacy, all customized to serve specific needs.
